Motor Skill and Communication Milestones in Infant Development

Babies develop rapidly after birth. Within the first few months of your child’s life, you should notice him or her developing the following motor and communications skills:

Motor Skills

Immediately after birth, babies have little in the way of motor skills. Their necks cannot even support the weight of their heads. Over the first few months of their lives, however, most babies gain the ability to hold their heads up while resting on their stomachs. They may also be able to grasp and hold toys.

Communication Skills

Most babies quickly discover how to interact with their parents. Within a couple of months, many of them smile on purpose and coo when their parents talk. Some even learn to imitate facial expressions or reach for their parents when they need attention.
